Our Story
Shamrock was founded by Carl Shanahan Sr in 1968 in Stamford, Connecticut. Although Carl has owned and operated many successful businesses in New England for decades, the story of Shamrock begins in a small agricultural town in Ireland. Carl Sr. was born in Bruff, Co Limerick in 1940 as an only child who was destined to take on the family trade as a stonemason. When he was young, his mother passed away so he moved in with her family, who owned and operated O’Donovans Hall. ‘The Hall’, as locals dubbed it was an entertainment hub located on Main Street. Equal parts dance hall, theater, cinema, and music venue, everyone felt a sense of togetherness at The Hall. Carl Sr. was exposed to arts, culture, and most importantly, a strong sense of family. He learned about life and people with the O’Donovans and attributes his open-minded worldview and entrepreneurial spirit to his years at The Hall.
After immigrating to America in the 1960s and doing odd jobs, Carl Sr. started Shamrock Building Services to support his own growing family. At this time, Stamford, CT, was an up-and-coming metropolitan area, which made it the perfect fit for a growing commercial cleaning operation. Shamrock landed Xerox as their first ‘big fish’ client, and by the end of the 1970s, Shamrock was cleaning 80% of corporate headquarters in Fairfield County. From the early days of the business, Carl relied on his 6 sons and many of his relatives and friends to help him clean and service buildings. As some of his sons grew up and graduated from college they officially joined the company and played a pivotal role in the expansion of the business out west into Colorado and into East Coast markets like New York, Boston, Wilmington, Philadelphia, and Florida solidifying Shamrock as a national commercial cleaning service provider. Three of of Carl Srs. sons, Carl, Kevin,and Aidan are involved in the operations to this day. Over 60 years after its humble beginnings Shamrock is thriving and Carl Sr. is still surrounded by his growing family, the heart of everything he does.
